Improving electronic sow feeding

English editorial edition of an archived AGYE article. Historical products, figures and programmes reflect the original publication. Read the original French article ↗

Concerned about your sows’ welfare while seeking better production? This archived article presents three electronic feeding and feed transport solutions.

The Nedap electronic sow feeding station

The station allows a sow to eat her ration quietly, protected from dominant animals. Its stainless-steel structure withstands demanding housing conditions, while the stainless-steel trough supports feed hygiene. Separate entrance and exit points discourage animals from reversing after feeding. Length and width can be adjusted; removable side panels allow access when needed.

Mechanical or pneumatic entrance doors, a trough shutter and a gilt training programme are among the options described in the original article.

Automated individual management

The system selects an individual feeding strategy and identifies sows that have not consumed their allowance, helping the farmer investigate problems and limit waste. Automatic separation can direct selected animals towards breeding or farrowing accommodation, reducing manual handling. Heat detection and separation depend on the equipment installed.

MAXIMUS feeding

The MAXIMUS system uses RFID technology to regulate feed delivery. The original article highlights its use around farrowing. HDX or FDX transponders identify animals and connect each ration to a programmed feeding strategy. Allowances can reflect body condition and days of gestation or lactation. Two feeds, such as meal or pellets, can be distributed.

The free-access gestation station described can feed up to 20 sows. Communication between feeding components, including silos and feeders, is automated; alarms draw attention to errors or irregularities. The installation is designed around natural feeding behaviour to reduce competition.

Multiflex feed transport

Multiflex complements feeding stations with a tube-and-spiral transport system suitable for different feeds, including pellets, meal and farm mixes. The source describes capacities from 600 to 3,000 kg/hour and transport speeds of 15 to 31 m/minute, depending on the model. Tubes withstand UV exposure and temperature changes; stainless-steel construction is possible.

The closed circuit carries feed from a starting point back to that point while preserving its condition. The original description presents it as maintenance-free; requirements must be checked for the actual installation.
