Feeding is central to the health and growth of lambs and goat kids, especially while their digestive systems are developing. The quality and balance of nutrients matter as much as quantity. Farmers must choose feeds and programmes suited to these particular needs.
Nutritional requirements
Young animals need adequate protein for growth, together with energy, vitamins and minerals. The original article highlights vitamins A, D and E and minerals including iron, zinc and copper. Requirements and tolerances differ between species; both deficiency and excess must be avoided when formulating a ration.
Feeding choices
Maternal milk and milk replacer
Milk from the dam is the natural starting point. Early colostrum management is important for passive protection. Where suckling is not possible, use a milk replacer formulated for the species and production system.
Commercial feeds
As the young animals develop, introduce suitable pellets or textured feeds progressively. Correctly formulated feeds offer consistent composition and help organise a controlled feeding programme.
Hay and fibre
Good-quality hay supplies fibre and supports the transition towards solid feed and the development of rumen function.
Adapt the programme to the animal
Age, weight, breed and health status influence feeding requirements. Monitor progress and adjust allowances as necessary. Always provide fresh, clean drinking water.
Manage weaning gradually
Introduce solid feed progressively and reduce milk in a managed way so that the digestive system can adapt. Avoid abrupt changes that create unnecessary stress.
Farm experience illustrates how a well-designed feeding strategy can support growth, health and production. Sound nutritional principles and consistent monitoring also contribute to the economic viability of the enterprise.
